Wiki Not Email

What Is It

Use wiki pages to replace email which either broadcasts information or responds to questions

Usage

In instances where a person or group is responsible for disseminating information and currently using email as the medium change to using the wiki.

In the case of an information broadcast the information can be put in the wiki and either use the wiki mechanisms (recently added pages list, news posts, etc) to announce its presence or an email can be sent to the normal distribution list with a link to the wiki page.

In the case of a request for information to the wiki author (via email or other means) the response is entered in a wiki page (either new or existing) and a link to the page is sent back to the person who posed the question. This is particularly useful for frequently asked questions as future responses will simply point to the existing wiki page.

Examples

This is a perfect pattern for help desk personnel or anyone who regularly answers others questions.

I've found that Word documents are an even bigger impediment to wikification than email. I'd suggest a pattern of wiki not Word as a separate pattern.

Now added as a pattern here at wikipatterns: Wiki Not Word
